In 1988, he obtained a second doctorate from Pierre and Marie Curie University in Paris (UPMC/Paris 6). He was appointed Professor of Applied Mathematics at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) in 1990 and, in 2001, joined the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM) as a full professor.

Since 2019, he has held the Alexander von Humboldt Chair at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU), where he directs the Chair of Dynamics, Control, Machine Learning, and Numerical Methods. He also holds part-time positions at the UAM and the University of Deusto (UD) in Bilbao, where he directs the Chair of Computational Mathematics. He also collaborates with Sherpa.ai as Chief Algorithm Scientist.

His research focuses on Applied Mathematics, with a special emphasis on Partial Differential Equations, Control Theory, Numerical Analysis, and Machine Learning. His work has been recognized with awards such as the Euskadi (Basque Country) Science and Technology Prize (2006), the Julio Rey Pastor National Research Prize (2007), and the W.T. and Idalia Reid Prize from the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) (2022).

He has held various academic and organizational positions, including Head of Mathematics for the Spanish National Research Plan (1999-2002), Founding Scientific Director of the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics (BCAM) (2008-2012), and Spokesperson for the Center for Research in Mathematics of Data (MoD) at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism (FAU) since 2019. He was an invited speaker in the "Control and Optimization" section of the 2006 International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in Madrid, and he is scheduled to give special lectures on Control Theory at the 2026 ICM.

He is the author of more than 440 publications and has supervised more than 32 doctoral theses. His research has been supported by three advanced grants from the European Research Council (NUMERIWAVES 2010, DyCon 2016, CoDeFeL 2024). She has also participated in industrial collaboration and technology transfer projects in Spain and Germany. In addition to her editorial work in leading applied mathematics journals, she actively contributes to the dissemination of scientific knowledge to a wider audience.
