López-de-Ipiña, Diego

Dr. Diego López-de-Ipiña is Full Professor and Principal Researcher of “DEUSTEK/MORElab – ICT for Good” group (http://morelab.deusto.es/), associated to Faculty of Engineering, University of Deusto in Bilbao, SPAIN. He was the director of the PhD program within the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Deusto from September 2013 to August 2018. He received his PhD from the University of Cambridge, U.K in 2002 with a dissertation entitled “Visual Sensing and Middleware Support for Sentient Computing”. He is responsible for the teaching modules “Software Process & Quality”, “Advanced Software Development for the Web of Data” and “Cloud Computing” offered in the BSc and MSc in Computer Engineering degrees offered by the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Deusto. His main research interests are pervasive computing, internet of things, semantic web, big data management, and IoT mediated human-environment interaction. He is currently focusing his work on the role of citizens as active data contributors through Citizen Science to the knowledge of smart communities modelled as Knowledge Graphs. He is particularly keen on exploring how ICT can help us addressing societal and environmental challenges through the Humanized Computing paradigm. He has been PhD supervisor in 20 dissertations. He has directed more than 100 final year and Master theses. He is taking and has taken part in several big consortium-based research European (GREENGAGE, SOCIO-BEE, INTERLINK, AURORAL, REACH, EDI, SIMPATICO, CITY4AGE, GREENSOUL, WELIVE, MOVESMART, IES CITIES, MUGGES, SONOPA, CBDP, GO-LAB, LifeWear) and Spanish (Internet of People, SentientThings, THOFU, mIO!, ADAPTA, SABESS, PIRAmIDE, ACROSS) projects, mostly as principal researcher from the Deusto part, involving the adoption of mobile computing, Cloud Computing, semantic web, social data mining, Big Data, smart cities, open government and NextWeb to novel AmI-related application areas such as urban computing, sustainable computing or AAL. He has more than 200 publications in relevant international conferences and journals on Ubiquitous Computing, Semantic Web, Middleware, Smart Cities and AmI, including more than 100 JCR-indexed journal articles. He has reviewed over 100 research projects for the Spanish Evaluator Agency (ANEP) and taken part in H2020 expert evaluator in Cloud Computing, Migrations and Personal Health topics, as well as an expert reviewer for COST actions. He has been conference chair in UCAmI 2012, IoP 2019, IoT 2019, Splitech 2020 to Splitech 2025. He is corresponding member of JAKIUNDE - Basque Science and Arts Academy. He received the ATLAS Elsevier research prize which recognizes the social impact of scientific papers.
