City4Age: Elderly-friendly City services for active and healthy ageing

Proyecto de Investigación H2020

Six cities around the world are helping their elder citizens to improve their daily life with the system that DeustoTech has helped to develop

Sector aplicación:

Smart Society: Salud en el hogar. Cultura de la salud

Reto/Interés para la industria:

The first and core objective of City4Age is to enable Ambient Assisted Cities or Age-friendly Cities. The project aims to create an innovative framework on ICT tools and services that can be deployed by European cities in order to: enhance early detection of risk related to frailty and Mild Cognitive Impairments (MCI), and provide personalised intervention that can help the elderly population to improve their daily life and also promote positive behaviour changes. City4Age will activate urban communities to facilitate the role of social/health services and of families in dealing with cognitive impairments and frailty in the elderly population. The challenge is to demonstrate that cities play a pivotal role in the early detection of (MCI and frailty) risks and subsequent interventions. The core idea is that smart cities can collect data in an unobtrusive way about individual behaviours. This data can be used in two ways: 1) to identify segments of the population potentially at risk and, 2) to closely monitor individuals already identified as specifically in need of close monitoring. In the latter case, negative changes of behaviours can be detected, prompting individualized intervention.

Descripción de la implementación:

City4Age’s focus has been on creating a series of tools that allow cities to easily deploy ambient assisted living solutions for the elder citizens. The created tools are: a common data model for the detection of MCI and Frailty related risks, an IoT infrastructure that allows the integration of heterogeneous sensors, a data repository that follows the Linked Open Data paradigm, algorithms to model the citizens’ behavior, algorithms to ascertain the risks related to MCI and Frailty and an intervention model to address these risks. The created tools have been deployed in six cities worldwide (Athens, Birmingham, Lecce, Madrid, Montpellier and Singapore), capturing more than half a million geriatric sub-factors.

We have obtained the following results in the project:

  • A repository that allows integrating heterogeneous data and sharing it following the Linked Open Data paradigm.
  • An hybrid activity recognition algorithm
  • A behavior modelling algorithm
  • Six JCR journal articles
  • Seven conference articles
